Jewellery stolen in morning robbery

1 min read

Tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewellery was stolen during the aggravated robbery of a Newmarket shop today.

A man entered Walker and Hall Jewellers on Broadway at 10.30 this morning armed with a knife and ordered the two staff and two customers to the back of the shop, before demanding rings and earrings be handed over, along with a box containing cash.

The offender rode off along Broadway towards Khyber Pass Rd on a mountain bike after securing his loot in a bright blue canvas or nylon knapsack.

He’s been described to Police as a Caucasian, about 180cm tall, of average build with tattoos on his left wrist. He wore a black woolen balaclava and motorcycle helmet on his head. He was heavily dressed in a black fishermen’s knit jersey, a black cotton twill suit-style jacket, black jeans and black woolen gloves.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Saunders said he would have been quite conspicuous on Broadway dressed that way on such a warm, sunny day.

"If anyone can recall seeing someone dressed like this dumping a push bike or getting onto a motorbike – or into any other type of vehicle for that matter – they should contact Auckland City Crime Squad with information," Mr Saunders said.
