Police investigating the death of 39 year-old Mark Burns are appealing for any sightings of the car he drove and was later found burned in.
The registered owner of the black 1990 Mitsubishi Diamante, 30-R four-door sedan with the registration number YH6810 was a relative, but Mr Burns was the usual driver.
His charred and stabbed body was found burnt in it in the early hours of Friday, September 5, by fire officers called to attend the fire in Reliable Way, Mt Wellington.
Detective Senior Sergeant David Pearson said the last reported sighting of Mr Burns was at 9.30am on Thursday, September 4 in Whitford.
"We’d very much like to hear from anyone who saw either the car or Mark Burns -- or indeed both -- at any time after that," Mr Pearson said.
"He was known to visit members of his family in Howick so it’s feasible he could have been seen at a number of places between there and where he lived alone in Massey.
"If any service station owners or attendants saw the vehicle and believe they might have its image on surveillance footage, we’d be happy to hear from them."
The murder investigation team is based at the Mt Wellington Police Station and people with information can call the team on 0800 6222-33.
