Three decades of youth partnership
Three decades of youth partnership
New Zealand Blue Light has come a long way since its first disco 29 years ago; it now provides a wide range of programmes and events to help and inspire young people.
The registered charity has more than 50 branches, organising young people's programmes and events that are free from drugs, alcohol and violence. Activities are overseen by police officers and sometimes personnel from the New Zealand Defence Force, another government partner in Blue Light.
Police Commissioner Peter Marshall has signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening the long-standing relationship between Police and Blue Light. The MOU will help promote the effective delivery of Blue Light programmes throughout New Zealand.
“The work of New Zealand Blue Light has never been more important,” says Commissioner Marshall, a Patron of Blue Light.
“Every year society seems to heap more pressures on our young people and engagement is the key to helping them resist those pressures.
“Engagement is the lifeblood of Blue Light. We need to work together as partners to help young people create a future which is positive for themselves and their communities.”
Blue Light aims to:
• reduce youth crime
• build community partnerships
• build young people’s self esteem
• enhance community safety; and
• build positive youth and police partnerships.
