Stay safe around fireworks
Police is reminding New Zealanders to celebrate safely with fireworks this year.
Numbers of calls to emergency services, hospital admissions relating to fireworks and fires started by fireworks have been falling – and Police would like that trend to continue.
“Guy Fawkes Night is a great opportunity to celebrate with our families and safety must be everyone’s first priority,” says Inspector Glyn Rowland, of the National Prevention Centre.
“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to go to an organised display. If you do plan to have fireworks at home, following the Fire Service’s simple advice will greatly reduce the risks and help keep you safe.”
The tips include:
- - Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions
- - Light fireworks in an open area, away from anything that could catch fire
- - Never mix fireworks with alcohol or drugs
- - Always let an adult light the fireworks
- - Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy
- - Keep all unlit fireworks in their box or bag until you are ready to light them
- - Never try to relight duds
- - Think about others – no fireworks after 10:30pm
- - Keep pets inside when fireworks are going off
