Schoolgirl's mural brightens Auckland City District station
When Auckland Central Police Station asked for ideas on how to brighten the wall behind its public counter, 14 year-old Teuane Baxter answered the call.
The Westlake Girls High School student came up with a mural design that celebrated the diversity of the local community as well as the station's policing goals.
Teuane, who is the great grand-daughter of celebrated Samoan artist Teuane Tibbo, took on the challenge of designing, planning and managing the project.
With her mother taking progress pics along the way and public counter staff patiently working around her, Teuane completed her masterpiece right on schedule.
The station's Customer Service Manager Tony Geldenhuys says the response from everyone has been fantastic. "Members of the public have even taken photos of it."
Teuane's mural was officially recognised at a recent morning tea celebration attended by District Commander Superintendent Mike Clement, Teuane's family, friends and two deans from her school.
All her hours of painting behind the station's public counter appear to have had an impact on Teuane's future goals. She now hopes to join the Police some day.
