Relay goes the extra mile…
In the North Island our torch relay has now made its way into the Eastern District, where it was welcomed by Te whanau o Hinerupe at Te Araroa. It has since visited, Ruatoria, Tokomaru Bay, Tolaga Bay, Gisborne and Wairoa. It has been on Horseback, travelled by waka and is now in Hawkes Bay.
In the South Island, Canterbury celebrated with a big relay event at Hagley Park involving other services and the Defence Force. The torch is now in the Tasman District and is in Franz Josef today.
Only a week to go until the relay will meet here in Wellington for the last leg of the relay at PNHQ, the Royal New Zealand Police College and Wellington District. Next weekend, retired staff from all ends of the country will start arriving for a reunion with their former colleagues and they will also be getting their walking shoes out ready for our big National Parade on August 1.
We just want to say a big thank you to all of the Districts for their enthusiasm in helping us celebrate this significant anniversary for women in Police. We look forward to seeing the District representatives at the parade. We’d also like to thank members of the public who have been involved in various activities, as well as the families of police for all of their support.
We’d like to invite any members of the public who would like to help us celebrate to come watch us as we make our way along Willis Street and Lambton Quay. We will be leaving Civic Square at 12.15pm and we will arrive at Parliament around 1pm.
