Police riders think pink
Two Auckland City District Road Police motorcycle riders donned bright pink Police vests at the Women’s International Motorcycling Association (WIMA) Annual Pink Ribbon Ride in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Constables Luke Dodson organised the eye-catching pink vests and Sergeant Dylan Hannah-Jones’s wife did the stitching of the Police flashes.
Luke and colleague Constable Dan Whalen rode in the vests, with Dylan – in regular uniform – running the policing operation.
Senior Sergeant David Hines says public support of the event was great. “The Pink Ribbon Ride was an outstanding event,” he says. “The turnout was brilliant, with hundreds of bikers taking part.
“At one stage the parade stretched from Quay Street to Kelly Tarltons on Tamaki Drive. It was great to see so many riders taking part to raise awareness of breast cancer.
“Our pink vests were well received by riders and spectators, with Police being thanked for their efforts and a lot of photo opportunities - even with gang associates - as the community came together to support this event.”
Janice Millman, WIMA Auckland Representative, wrote to thank the "brilliant" officers for their involvement. “On behalf of WIMA and the Pink Ribbon Ride I want to thank you for helping us ensure the ride was an enjoyable and safe event. We couldn't have done it without the support of Police.
“In particular, please extend our gratitude to the brilliant group of officers who came along on the day and donned on their pink vests and got into the spirit of the event. Everyone really appreciated their involvement and support and they way they joined in.”
