Police remembers
When the police family gathered at home and abroad this week to remember those we have lost, it was a day of tradition and of firsts.
For the first time Police formally remembered members who died from accident or illness arising from their duties, with 38 names added to those commemorated.
It was also the first time a Remembrance Day ceremony had been broadcast, with the national event at the Royal New Zealand Police College (RNZPC) being live-streamed online.
The 38 victims of illness or accident were identified through Police’s ongoing Recognition Project, which has assessed more than 700 cases against strict criteria.
Relatives attended services at which the 38 names were read alongside those of 29 officers slain since 1886, and of 73 serving or retired staff who
died in the past year.
The ceremony was streamed through Police’s national Facebook page – and was also picked up and broadcast live by media. The video can still be seen on
Police’s Youtube channel.
Remembrance Day is marked by police services throughout Australasia and the Pacific on 29 September.
