Police Commissioner on Child Protection Week
Police Commissioner on Child Protection Week
Video transcript
Child protection is everybody's business. Child Protection Week is an initiative run by the Australian and New Zealand Police Agencies to highlight the risks that our youngest most vulnerable citizens face on a daily basis.
From a New Zealand Police perspective, we're doing a lot. We are reforming our child abuse investigation methodology. We are refreshing our relationships with other agencies who join with us in protecting children.
We have established OCEANZ (Online Child Exploitation Agency NZ), which is an agency within Police that aims to protect children from online victimisation. We are doing a lot of work in our road policing area to protect children, those that are not strapped into their car seats or seatbelts and of course making people aware that children can so easily be missed when backing the car.
We have had a major initiative now for a number of years around Family Violence. We get about 90,000 reports each year of family violence, at least half of those have young children involved - so stopping violence in the home is a very important part of protecting children. If you know of a child that is at risk of harm in such a way - we want you to call us.
