New website to report cybercrime
Web users now have an easy way to report malicious or unlawful activity on the internet.
The ORB (Online Reporting Button) is a website developed by NetSafe, New Zealand's online safety organisation.
It was launched on Thursday night with Police Commissioner Howard Broad, Consumer Affairs Minister Heather Roy and NetSafe executive director Martin Cocker.
Howard Broad says police hear of a vast range of cyber incidents, including spam, fraud, privacy breaches and child explotation. Some are clearly criminal under current laws; others may not be unlawful but are certainly destructive, unfair and upsetting to victims.
Safety in this vast and fast-moving space is a huge challenge, he says. The best way to police it is the way we police our real communities - by forming strong partnerships with agencies and communities, and empowering individuals to act.
Reports received through the ORB will be referred to the relevant agency, such as Police, Department of Internal Affairs or Ministry of Consumer Affairs. They may be made anonymously.
