Lane, a good sort
Lane, a good sort
Congratulations to Senior Constable Lane Demchy, who has been named a One News Good Sort for his work with young people and the community.
Waiouru-based Lane runs a CACTUS programme for school students, which involves pre-dawn starts three days a week, picking up youngsters to drive them to Ruapehu College, Ohakune.
There they undertake a challenging exercise session with Army or Military Police trainers, have breakfast and listen to a motivational speaker, all before school.
The programme – which runs for ten weeks through term one - started last year after discussions between Lane and Ruapehu deputy principal Jason White.
Lane describes being nominated as a Good Sort as humbling – and thanks the Army and Military Police for their “phenomenal” support, as well as Police colleagues from Waiouru, Ohakune, Raetihi and the Highway Patrol, school staff, parents and others who contribute.
“I’m just one person,” he says. “To be singled out as having made it happen is nice but it wouldn’t have happened without a lot of other people.”
