Taking a stand against violence20 November, 2009 - 09:12 A police band performing in a town square is just one way in which staff from around Central District will be taking a stand against violence and supporting White Ribbon Day. White Ribbon Day is the United Nations International Day for the elimination of violence against women and the wearing of a white ribbon has been adopted as the international symbol of opposition to such violence. As well as wearing white ribbons on duty staff will be lending support to a number of community events aimed at raising awareness of the issue. During the 08/09 financial year Police attended over 73,000 family violence occurrences with the majority of the primary victims being women. Of course children and men are also subjected to violence and the Police commitment is to all victims regardless of age or gender. "It doesn't matter who the violence is towards, it is simply not acceptable," says Central District Family Violence Co-ordinator Maree Hill. "There is a great deal of collaborative work that goes on all year round to help address the issues and bring offenders to justice. White Ribbon Day is a great opportunity to highlight that work and to reinforce the point that it requires a collective effort to ensure we are all safe in our homes."
