Southern District introduction - New Zealand Police

District Commander
Superintendent Bob Burns

Welcome to the Southern Police District.

We provide a policing service that covers a geographical area as far south as Stewart Island, as far north as Oamaru and west across to Haast. We have the largest geographical police district in the country and cover 24% of the country’s landmass. See our district map for boundaries and police stations location.

Police are strategically placed throughout three designated policing areas - Otago Rural (including the areas managed by Waitaki, Queenstown Lakes, and Central Otago district councils), Dunedin (including Clutha) and Southland. These policing areas have varying policing issues to contend with. The communities we serve within these areas are diverse and include urban communities, smaller settlements in rural areas, and remote places.

Dunedin Area has 46% of the district's population and has one of the country's largest populations of 18 to 22-year-olds, based at the University of Otago. It also hosts the large and newly-built Otago Corrections Facility located near Milton.

Southland Area has 31% of the Southern Police District's population including the majority (13%) of its Maori population. The Southland Area has a very strong farming base with tourism and fishing assisting the economy.

Otago Rural is the smaller of our police areas, however, it is the largest growing. Tourism is the chief driver of the economy and search and rescue plays an important part in policing activities. Queenstown also has a busy international airport, which is a gateway to the south for visiting international dignitaries.

We have 45 police stations in the Southern Police District of varying sizes. Southern has the largest number of small stations in the country. Our District Headquarters is based in Dunedin.

As at April 2009 there were 650 police staff across the district, including 100 non-constabulary staff. They are committed to working in partnership with our communities to keep the places we live, work and play safe. They do this by meeting our district's primary goal - to reduce crime in our communities and crashes on our roads. Police staff within Southern District enjoy very strong relationships within the communities they serve and are extremely passionate about maintaining this bond.

Over the past 10 years, crime in Southern has been steadily decreasing and remains under national levels per 10,000 population. We are very proud of our record and our success in working with our communities to reduce and resolve crime.

Our district site provides an introduction to the area. It includes contact details and other helpful information about our district goals and priorities. I hope that it gives you an indication of the ‘style’ of policing we adopt and how we are going to enhance our business over the coming years.

Welcome to our site and enjoy your visit.

Our Goals - Safe Homes and Safe Streets

Our key goals are directed at making safer communities together. These include the objectives of reducing:
  • all forms of violence, which includes family violence
  • the numbers killed and injured in road crashes
  • theft of and from cars and burglary.
  • We need the community along side for us to achieve these goals.
