Northland District introduction - New Zealand Police

Northland District Commander, Superintendent Mike Rusbatch

District Commander
Superintendent Mike Rusbatch

Welcome to the Northland Police District.

Northland covers an area of 12,844 square km between Kaiwaka and Cape Reinga. Here's a map of the Northland District.

Because of its geographical spread and many remote areas, Northland is one of the most challenging districts to police. It also has one of the highest rates of social deprivation in New Zealand, and a diverse population with varied needs.

The Northland Police District is the second smallest in the country after Tasman. It has 21 police stations - five of these are sole-charge and eight are two-person stations. Some of these attract a "hard to fill" allowance because of their remote locations. Our district phonebook provides phone, fax and address details for each station.

The District is divided into two areas. The Whangarei/Kaipara area stretches from Whangarei to Kaiwaka, across to Dargaville and Kawakawa. The Mid/Far North area starts at Kawakawa and stretches along both coastlines to Cape Reinga.

Our District Commander is based in the District Headquarters in Whangarei.

Northland Police provide the following specialist teams and services:

  • Frontline police units/teams
  • Law Enforcement Team
  • Specialist Crimes Squad
  • Search and Rescue
  • Serious criminal investigation
  • Forensics
  • Youth Aid and Youth Education
  • Strategic Traffic Units
  • Dog handlers
