Victimisation Snapshot

This report provides a quick overview of crime victimisations in your area. To protect the privacy of individuals for crime types other than burglary, victimisations occurring in dwellings are excluded from the data. Data including those victimisations are available in the Victimisations reports below.

It has two versions depending on your device:

Important: The following reports are best accessed using a desktop computer or laptop.

Detailed Reports

These statistics present a detailed picture of who is affected by crime in New Zealand, who is committing it, the relationship between offender and victim, and how offenders are being dealt with.

RCVS is about victims of crime, so only includes crimes that clearly have an identified victim. RCOS also includes crimes that do not have a clear victim, such as drug offences.

RCVS and RCOS were introduced in 2014-15. Updated RCVS and RCOS data are released at the end of every month to provide the most up-to-date information possible. They replace crime statistics previously released twice-yearly.

You can find out more about these statistics in the RCVS briefing (PDF, 314KB) and RCOS briefing (PDF, 253KB).

User manuals on RCVS (PDF, 390KB) and RCOS (PDF, 339KB) are also available.

Overview

On 30 November 2016 NZ Police launched policedata.nz to provide easy access to Police crime data through a number of interactive reports that can be accessed from this page. Data are updated in these reports on the last working day of every month.

On 31 October 2017 policedata.nz was enhanced by changing the technology to use HTML instead of Flash, thereby making the reports accessible to more devices.

Links to available reports are provided above. Police intends rolling out more reports over time.

These reports are designed to support partners and communities to access Police data to help inform their planning, decision-making and policy development. The reports may also be of interest to media, researchers and others.

The data sets behind the policedata.nz reports have been designed in consultation with Statistics NZ, who continues to work with Police, as it does with all government agencies who publish official statistics, to provide oversight and advice regarding the statistics they produce.

Police has also consulted with the office of the Privacy Commissioner to ensure privacy issues were properly considered and addressed. The reports above contain anonymised data. In accessing the data, you should not to attempt to re-identify individuals or speculate on the identity of individuals. Police reminds you of your obligations under the Privacy Act to protect the privacy of individuals.
